Hard drives are indispensable for all of us, irrespective or where we work. Every one today needs a hard drive for a number of reasons, which has increased the incidence of hard drive failures. Like any other mechanical device, hard drives are also prone to injury and damage. The very nature of these is to store information that is usually quite valuable, and therefore, any kind of failure is likely to put the stored information at risk of being lost. This is why data recovery services have gained momentum, because the kind of files stores in these disks can have extremely important implications.

DIY data recovery tools have recently become popular, since these allow people the freedom to repair their devices on their own without having to hire professional services. While some hard disks can certainly be recovered from home, certain more complex cases definitely need to be taken to the professionals. This is because for more complicated cases, where there is more information at stake, depending on the kind of damage endured, even the temperature and air at home can affect the disk.

There are different kinds of data loss, depending on which you can take a call. Physical data loss, as the name suggests, can take place due to physical damage to the hard drive, and are usually a result of environmental factors. You may hear weird noises and whirring coming from the hard disk, which can indicate physical data loss. On the other hand, logical data loss takes place due to human factors such as partition failure, file deletion by mistake, virus infection and accidental formatting. Data recovery on WD hard drive can only be performed once you have understood the kind of data loss suffered. Once you have correctly diagnosed the problem, you can proceed with data recovery:

  1. Physical data recovery

You would need to hire a recovery specialist for this kind of data loss, since it may involve component replacement, platter transplant and other specific details which must take place in a clean room by only professional handlers. In short, the specialist needs to extract data from the corrupted media. Not to mention, this type of data recovery is usually more expensive.

While DIY data recovery kits are available, it is not advisable, since physical data recovery needs to be done in a sterile environment, and even the air in your house can cause further damage to the disk. If the data is extremely important, even a small mistake during the process can make the data get lost forever. When a professional handles these, he/she usually knows what to do in case of any unforeseen situations, which others cannot possibly know.

  • Logical data recovery.

If you have some knowledge about handling computers, you can perform a logical data recovery on your own by following a set of guidelines, which are usually provided by the manufacturer in case of any event that leads to logical data loss. This would include deleting the virus, system repair, and partition recovery and program restoration. This can be performed without disassembling the drive, and any good data recovery software should ideally be enough.
